Peintre de compositions, à personnages, portraits, sujets divers, peintre à gouache, pastelliste, dessinateur. Post-cézanien puis abstrait.

 

À partir de 1909, il suivit parallèlement les cours de l'Ecole des Beaux-arts et du Conservatoire de Musique de Marseille, alors dans le même édifice de la Place Carli. En 1914, il fut présélectionné pour le concours du Prix de Rome, qui fut interrompu du fait de la guerre. Lui-même fut réformé. En 1916, à la suite d'un accident, il fut amputé de deux doigts. Il renonça à la profession de violoncelliste et se voua définitivement à la peinture. Il vint à Paris, poursuivre sa formation dans l'atelier de Fernand Cornon. En 1919, il fut initié à la restauration de peinture et exerça ensuite cette profession. Cette même année, il rencontra Maurice Denis, duquel il reçut les conseils aux Ateliers d'Art Sacré. À partir de 1919, il a participé à de nombreuses expositions collectives, d'entres elles des Salons à Paris, et à Aix-en-Provence: en 1953 avec Gleizes, Delaunay, Villon, Herbin, Léger; en 1967 avec Calder, Masson, Messagier. En 1992, il s'installe à Aix-en-Provence et y fit sa première exposition personnelle en 1933, présentée par Maurice Denis. En 1935, il fut nommé professeur à l'Ecole des Beaux-arts d'Aix-en-Provence. En 1941-1942, il rencontre Albert Gleizes à Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, avec lequel il resta étroitement lié jusqu'à sa mort. En 1946, il créa l'atelier de peinture à l'Ecole des Beaux-arts. En 1952, il peignit une décoration de 12 mètres sur 4,50 à la Faculté de Droit d'Aix, dont l'architecte était Fernand Pouillon.

Ce fut un peintre d'excellente technique et un homme de grande culture, pour qui peinture, musique, qu'il continuait à pratiquer, et poésie donnaient sa raison d'être à la vie. Son oeuvre se subdivise en trois parties principales, encore qu'elles s'interpénètrent parfois. Dans sa jeunesse traitant de sujets divers, il faisait montre de la technique apprise et de sérieux dons personnels. À partir de 1919, la rencontre avec Maurice Denis orienta et influença fortement son oeuvre vers des compositions ambitieuses. Après la rencontre avec Albert Gleizes, qui l'impressionna beaucoup, de par sa personnalité d'artiste, son immense culture artistique et de par son rayonnement spirituel, Albert se remit totalement en question. Peignant d'abord des natures mortes et quelques sujets divers dans un esprit proche de Gauguin et des Nabis, il s'engagea ensuite dans la voie de l'abstraction, avec des compositions très proches de Gleizes, alors en accord avec son esprit général de l'abstraction française de l'après-guerre, autour de Bissière, Manessier, Lapicque et autres. L'oeuvre dans sa totalité est abondante. Les périodes qui la scindent montrent une évidente perméabilité aux influences. Il n'en reste pas moins, dans sa modestie du disciple, un artiste authentique et fort d'une rare maîtrise technique.

In 1909, he attended courses both at the School of Fine Arts and Music Conservatory of Marseille, in the same building of the Place Carli. In 1914, he was pre-selected for the Prix de Rome, which was interrupted because of the war. Himself was reformed. In 1916, after an accident, he had two fingers amputated. He renounced the profession of cellist and finally devoted himself to painting. He came to Paris to continue his training in the workshop of Fernand Cornon. In 1919, he was introduced to painting restoration and then practiced this profession. That same year, he met Maurice Denis, from who he received the advice in the Sacred Art Workshop. From 1919, he has participated in numerous group exhibitions of them Salons in Paris and Aix-en-Provence: in 1953 with Gleizes, Delauney, Villon, Herbin, Léger; in 1967 with Calder, Masson, Messagier. In 1992, he moved to Aix-en-Provence and there made his first solo exhibition in 1933, presented by Maurice Denis. In 1935 he was appointed professor at the School of Fine Arts of Aix-en-Provence. In 1941-1942, he met Albert Gleizes in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, with whom he remained closely linked until his death. In 1946 , he created the painting workshop at the School of Fine Arts. In 1952, he painted a 12 meters decoration for the Law Faculty of Aix-en-Provence, whose architect was Fernand Pouillon.

It was a painter with an excellent technique and a man of great culture, for whom painting, music, he continued to practice, and poetry gave its purpose to life. His work is divided into three main parts, although they are sometimes intertwined. In his youth, he was shown the technique learned and serious personal gifts on various topics. From 1919, his meeting with Maurice Denis orientated and strongly influenced his work towards ambitious compositions. After meeting Albert Gleizes, greatly impressed by its artistic personality, his immense artistic culture and by his spiritual influence, Albert applied some self-analyses. First painting still lifves and some topics in the near of Gauguin and the Nabis, he then experimented abstraction, his compositions similar to Gleizes’, while in agreement with the general spirit of the abstraction of the French post-war with Bissière, Manessier, Lapicque and others. The work in its entirety is abundant. with periods which show a clear influences permeability. In his disciple modesty, he remains a true artist and a rare strong technical master.
