Il commença à peindre très jeune, dès 1916 sur des toiles tendues à même le mur. En 1919, il découvre Cézanne lors d’une exposition à Munich. Il s’installe au Château noir de Cézanne en 1928, près de la montagne Sainte-Victoire. Il renonce à la peinture pour le dessin et travaille sans couleur jusqu’en 1933. De 1934 à 1944, faute de moyens, il cesse de peindre. En 1939, il est interné dans le camp d’étrangers des Milles, il regagne le Château noir et il réussit à échapper aux nazis. En 1944, il recommence à dessiner et enseigne, puis il s’adonne à la lithographie en 1950, il imprima lui-même l’Evangile selon St Luc, qu’il illustra de quatre-vingt-cinq lithographies.

Ayant produit dans sa jeunesse des scènes bibliques, il en vient à délaisser l’huile pour le crayon gras et tente d'assimiler la technique de Cézanne, laissant la majeure partie du support au blanc, et dont les arabesques sont à la limite de la non-figuration, rattrapée par un titre.

He started painting very young, in 1916 with stretched canvas on the wall. In 1919, he discovered Cézanne at an exhibition in Munich. He moved to Cézanne’s Château Noir in 1928, near the Sainte-Victoire Mountain. He gave up painting for drawing and start working without color until 1933. From 1934 to 1944, lack of resources, he stopped painting. In 1939, he was interned in he foreigner camp of Les Milles, then he returned to the Château Noir and managed to escape the Nazis. In 1944, he starts to draw and sign, then he devoted himself to lithography in 1950, he printed himself the Gospel of Luke and illustrated the eighty-five lithographs.

Having produced biblical scenes in his youth, he comes to abandon oil for grease pencil and tries to assimilate Cézanne’s technique, leaving most of the canvas white and with arabesques on the borderline of the non-figuration, caught by a title.
