Peintre de portraits, paysages animés, paysages, marines, pastelliste, sculpteur.

 

 

Il fut élève d'Alexandre Cabanel à l'Ecole des Beaux-arts de Paris. Il débuta au Salon des Artistes Français de Paris en 1878, avec deux portraits. Il y exposa sans interruption jusqu'en 1925, obtenant une médaille à l'Exposition Universelle de 1900, une médaille d'or et le prix Marie Bashkirtseff qui le plaça hors-concours. Il a aussi participé à aux Expositions Universelles de Londres, Bruxelles, Saint-Louis, Sao Paulo. Il était peintre du Ministère de la Marine.

Il abandonna tôt le portrait au profit du paysage. Pour l'Etat, il a représenté l'Entrée de l'escadre russe à Toulon, le 13 octobre 1894. Dans la suite de l'Impressionnisme, il s'est montré sensible aux conditions climatiques du paysage, comme l'attestent certains de ses titres: Matinée au bord de la mer 1892, Demi-soleil en Provence 1893, Le Soir au bord de l'Orle 1894, Lever de lune 1896, etc. D'une façon générale, il a surtout peint en Provence et sur la côte méditerranéenne, ayant aussi fait des incursions en Bretagne. Il prenait ses thèmes aussi bien  dans l'arrière-pays que sur la côte: Récif de Saint-Vincent 1888, Sous les pins 1891, Un ruisseau dans l'Hérault 1892, La Source 18895.

He was a student of Alexandre Cabanel at the School of Fine Arts of Paris. He debuted at the Salon des Artistes Français of Paris in 1878, with two portraits.
